2012/13 Season Fleetdown United Make History by being promoted into the Kent County Premier Division.
Fleetdown United first team can proudly announce themselves as ‘Champions’ of the Kent County 1st Division, meaning they will be the first team in Fleetdown United’s history to play in the Premier Division, which is a great achievement to all of the players and coaching staff involved but also to everyone behind the scenes.
Fleet’s season started brightly by winning their first six games, which resulted in Manager Paul Lakin (Squidy) receiving the ‘Manager of the Month award’. However it was at this point where Fleet lost their first game of the season and a run of bad form resulted in Fleetdown unable to win for 8 games. Promotion at this point was looking bleak, but through the hard work of the players and coaches, the Fleetdown boys decided to change their fate by beating University of Kent 2-0 at home which resulted in a run of 5 matches undefeated.
March approached and the league was still highly competed between five teams, however it was the bank holiday weekend in which Fleetdown faced Otford twice in three days. Richard McCambridge in devastating form scoring all four goals at the home fixture and two in the away fixture helping Fleetdown to a 4-1 victory in both games. It was in these performances which Fleetdown demonstrated their quality and work rate of all 14 players. As the season developed, two front runners emerged from the pack, Erith 147 and Fleetdown United.
With the three games left to play Fleetdown United were heading the league, however Erith still had a two games games in hand which meant they could still mathematically win the league. The Players knew that it would require 9 points from the last three points to put pressure on Erith. Fleetdown united vs Forest Hill Park was one of the biggest games of the season, Fleetdown were trailing 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining in the match, an equalizer was found with only minutes remaining, a uncharacterized finish from Skipper Brook Jackson gave Fleetdown the lead with seconds to go. It was at this point the team could feel that this might be their season.
Second to Last game of the Season, On a Tuesday Evening Fleetdown faced Erith 147, with two clinical finishes from Kyle Gurney against Belvedere and a classy finish from Luke Smith giving a 3-2 win over their title rivals Erith 147, giving six points to the fleet. It was Saturday 11th May Fleetdown became ‘Champions’ when Erith 147 lost to Forest Hill park 5-4 in dramatic fashion. They had done it!! Fleetdown United had Won the Kent County Division 1.
